Sophia Moraczewski ’29

Sophia Moraczewski
Matthews

Sophia Moraczewski is a first-year in Matthews Hall planning to study History and Economics with a citation in French. Interested in foreign policy and international diplomacy, she believes that uniting history and economics is a powerful means of better understanding and making change in the world.

In high school, she chaired the Social Action Student Advisory Board, where she worked with non-profits, political activists, and nuns to create social justice programming for her school. Her goal was for each student to engage in service that legitimately made a difference—and made them different. She brings her experience initiating thoughtful dialogue about issues including the death penalty, immigration, and abortion to the Intellectual Vitality Student Board, where she is focused on creating events that will deepen Harvard students’ ability to approach differences with nuance and introspection.

Sophia came to Harvard looking to expand and challenge her perspectives. Completing summer orientation, she was struck by Intellectual Vitality’s emphasis on engaging in conversations with people with whom one disagrees without the goal of compromise–rather, with the goal of better understanding both the other’s perspective and one’s own. We will–and should–disagree. Sophia looks forward to asking questions, reflecting, and asking more questions.

When she isn’t thinking about how to foster a culture of intellectual curiosity, you will find Sophia running, writing, perusing used book stores, or trying to learn new instruments.
