Joel Crawford is a Senior in Winthrop House from Houston, Texas, studying Government and Philosophy. On campus, he has served as the Co-Executive Director of the Harvard Undergraduate Legal Committee, Extracurricular Officer of the Harvard Undergraduate Association, and the Public Service Chair of the Black Men’s Forum. He is also an undergraduate fellow in the Safra Center, researching political participation and epistemic challenges of the digital age. He is very interested in institutional barriers that prevent communication. Outside of campus, he is the President of the Cambridge NAACP Youth Council. He enjoys listening to jazz music and talking about anything related to sports.
Joel’s main passion lies in bringing people together from different backgrounds and creating environments where they can learn from one another. He cares deeply about people and is committed to making sure everyone has the opportunity to communicate openly and honestly.
On the SAB, he hopes to ensure that all students are able to fully embrace the Harvard experience. Since arriving at Harvard, he has intentionally sought out spaces that push him to grow both intellectually and personally. He has made it a priority to engage with people whose backgrounds, identities, and experiences differ from his own because he believes in the transformative power of learning from others. He wants to help make IV programming more inclusive, both in content and in reach, so that students from underrepresented communities feel welcomed and inspired to participate.
