On January 24, 2024, as part of the Intellectual Vitality Initiatives, Harvard College welcomed guest speakers from PEN America for a special professional development event for College staff and administrators. The day-long summit comprised of three workshops that aimed to help equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and insights needed to navigate issues related to academic freedom, hate, and challenging dialogues on campus. The summit kicked off with the first session focusing on the principles and importance of fostering freedom of speech and academic freedom within the campus. Participants discussed the compatibility and challenges of free speech and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), exploring insights into addressing the challenges between academic freedom and the importance of an inclusive educational environment.
Session 1: Laying the Foundation – Free Speech and Academic Freedom on Campus
The summit kicked off with the first session focusing on the principles and importance of fostering freedom of speech and academic freedom within the campus. Participants discussed the compatibility and challenges of free speech and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), exploring insights into addressing the challenges between academic freedom and the importance of an inclusive educational environment.
Session 2: “Navigating Tense Moments and Aftermath Communications”
The session delved into the key principles of tense moments and what they can look like within teaching, learning, and community. Participants gained knowledge on the approaches needed and the strategies for effective response in handling these various challenging situations. The session highlighted the importance of understanding, empathy, and active listening to remain open to all voices.
Session 3: “Academic Freedom & Inclusion: Using the Tools to Uphold Both”
Participants brought together what they learned in the two previous sessions and engaged in practical discussions and case studies, exploring complex scenarios related to free speech and diversity. They examined the protected status of speech, potential impacts on various groups, and the appropriateness of public statements. The session strived to equip attendees with tools they had just learned to navigate challenging situations, creating thoughtful insights into the principles of free speech and inclusion in academic settings.
